Autumn Veil Grenache 2024
We started working with the renowned 1858 Stonegarden Grenache vineyard in 2012. We fell in love with the vineyard’s history, the sensational fruit, and the stunning wines made from it.
In 2018 we asked Glen, Stonegarden’s owner, if we could take some cuttings from this historic old vineyard. And in the winter of 2019, we planted Poonawatta’s first Grenache vineyard, on a lean rocky hillside. Planting a new vineyard in the middle of a drought, in thin lean soil with more rock that dirt, was challenging. The vines have taken years to ‘get going’ and even now a third of the vineyard is still doing it tough.
These small bush vines are low to the ground, and spring frosts can be an issue. The combination of dry years, frosts and losses to birds saw us pick just 450kgs in 2024. We picked early before the birds stole the last of the berries, the fruit juicy and vibrant, with lovely crunchy red berry flavours.
Open fermented, plunged twice daily, and matured in a seasoned French oak barrique for 14 months, this wine has always been delightfully fresh and bright. So, we decided to bottle it as a nouveau style, to capture the vibrant and fresh red fruits.
It's a delightful light red wine, ideal for enjoying in ‘rosé’ occasions when lightly chilled. It's full of flavour and deliciously drinkable.
