The 2011 vintage was underpinned by the best Winter/Spring rainfall in five years, providing good soil moisture for the growing season. A November heatwave reminded us of the recent drought years, however the balance of the ripening seasons was warm to mild, the cooler climate of Eden Valley – in particular the cool of cold nights through most of summer, ensured the deeply rooted 1880 vines soldiered through the season in fine style. Harvest was three weeks earlier than average thanks to the mild sunny conditions. Even with only two acres (24 rows average 38 vines each), we saw sufficient variation in flavour development to justify hand picking in three parts, with the best parcels blended together pre-bottling.
