1919 Single Vineyard Shiraz 2016
$70.00
Mark Bartholomaeus old vine Shiraz is one of Eden Valley’s icon vineyards, established in 1919. We are grateful to secure a small portion of the harvest to make the Poonawatta 1919 Shiraz. The bottle sports a unique genuine wood label with burnished print; every label showcasing different grain patterns; reminiscent of the old vines themselves.
Fragrant, savoury and luscious. Saturated with lovely, soft blue to black fruits, underpinned by chocolate and coffee flavours. Beautiful mid-palate sweetness, full flavoured with fine oak and elegant tannins. Only a few hundred bottles produced each vintage.
“It’s bright and it’s purple. Ripe and deeply-cored mulberries lead the bouquet, quality oak in the background, along with dark spice. Delicious, still-young shiraz – the balance is incredibly impressive – soy, ripe plums, and toasty oak. Great stuff. 94/100”. The Real Review.
“A voluptuous shiraz if ever there was one. Floral, deeply fruited, smoked with oak, set with (integrated) tannin. Drinking it is like sinking into a velvet lounge. It boasts more than just volume; it has shape, for starters, and an earthen, coal-like underpinning. Certainly you have to enjoy the bigger, sweeter end of town but this doesn’t feel in any way overcooked; it remains fresh and perfumed. It unfolds as it rests in the glass too; you can drink this now but a stint in the cellar certainly won’t hurt. 94 Points.” The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
